Why risk management is important as a student?

It is important that experiential learning opportunities are safe, robust and satisfying for all university stakeholders. The objective of risk management in Experience Learning is to equip the teachers and staff who run these programs to manage risks, reduce liability to the University and optimize the learning environment for students. It is impossible to guarantee that any experience will be free from interruptions, uncertainty, or damage. This is true in traditional classroom environments, as well as in experiential learning contexts.

Therefore, as we identify new ways for students to participate in solving real-world problems and encourage them to meet the needs of the general community, we strive to incorporate the best risk management practices into this initiative by proactively identifying, evaluating, managing and monitoring the risks present in these experiential opportunities. To this end, we have created a risk management manual that presents teachers and staff with information, principles and best practices that can help them effectively manage the risks inherent in experiential learning opportunities. Visit the “Risk Management Resources” tab if you want to download a copy of the Risk Management Manual. Managing risk means considering the effect of uncertainty (whether positive or negative) on school objectives.

Hard copies of the pocket guide on the risk management process for schools (available on the Resources tab) can also be requested at the branch office. This policy sets out the requirements for schools to identify and manage risks that could affect their students, staff, or operations. Risk management includes coordinated activities to direct and control risks to achieve an objective. School leadership teams (principals and business managers) can contact the Planning, Risk and Governance Branch for specific risk advice and risk training workshops.

It generally describes the risk, the causes of that risk, and the person or group responsible for managing it. Therefore, as we identify new ways for students to participate in solving real-world problems and encourage them to meet the needs of the general community, we strive to incorporate the best practices of risk management into this initiative by proactively identifying, evaluating, managing and monitoring the risks present in these experiential opportunities. Identifying current controls and their effectiveness is one of the most important aspects of risk management. If a school is unsure if a risk assessment is necessary, it should contact the Planning, Risk and Governance Branch for clarification and advice.
